I wrote last week that series 4 of Skins was more downbeat than previous series. That there was little fun and few wins for our narcissist, hedonistic heroes. Well last nights episode changed all of that. The lead character was JJ, the autistic sensitive one.
JJ got the hots for a girl he worked with at a hardware megastore, but was afraid to ask her out. After much encouragement from Thomas, who was working with him, he was forced to ask her over the public address system at the store and she agreed, also via the PA to an audience of customers and other staff.
Things never run smoothly in Skins, nor in real life for that matter and JJ’s new love Lara turned out to be a single mum, with a nine month old baby and a jealous ex boyfriend, the baby’s Daddy, in tow.
| After a disastrous start to their first date, while JJ was following dating advice from Cook, who, having escaped from prison, was now hiding out in JJ’s bedroom. Lara explained that she liked JJ for himself. Things then went well for a while, until he decided to introduce her to his friends and family. Initially taking her to visit the acrimonious atmosphere of Emily and Naomi’s place. Who are still fighting over Naomi’s affair. Then to his parents, where his mother was shocked and very displeased to be presented with the 9 month old child. Lara split up with JJ.
But as a result we found out that JJ’s father had more faith in him than most people and always believed he would be OK, despite his problems. So JJ set out to win Lara back. |

This resulted in one of the best scenes in the whole series when JJ serenaded Lara below her bedroom window with Spandau Ballet’s True backed by a Ukulele Orchestra.
Now I’m a big fan of the Uke and play a bit myself and this inspired me to pick up mine and learn the song.
So a fun little episode with a happy ending, we all need one every now and then.

Another dark episode of Skins shown last night (7/9/10) on SBS This one featured Effy as the main character and showed her recovery, of sorts, from her nervous breakdown. Then her tumble back into the abyss with another attempted suicide by standing in front of a bus, in a repeat of her brothers accident.
We were introduced to her very suspect Psychologist, another man who seems to have become infatuated with her. He ended the show by attacking Freddie with a Baseball bat. Did he kill him? I doubt it, but we will find out next week.
I read yesterday that Lilly Loveless (Naomi) found the filming of this series very stressful, due to the dark and dramatic story lines. But she said she was very happy with the work. I agree that the stories are good and the acting very good and these episodes do make you think about the consequences of the characters lives. But I must admit I prefer the lighter episodes, like the JJ one reported above, with a little feel good factor.
I also read that Lilly is no longer Loveless, she is dating a guy called Ben who works on the crew for Skins. So she really was acting in all those lesbian scenes, sorry girls she plays for the other team.
