Glee series 2 episode 2
Britney/Brittany
Well I’ll have to say in advance that this will probably be the most negative review posted so far on Oz TV Reviews. My aim is to avoid canning shows, because that is the easy thing to do. Sensationalism sells, but that is not what we are about. I avoid many shows as I know I won’t enjoy them, so why bother. But when one of the biggest current programmes really stinks it has to be pointed out.
So far the special guest and artist specific episodes of Glee have been fun. The Olivia Newton-John and Madonna episodes spring to mind. But this was just a sell out, it seems to me that Britney Spears only agreed to take part if they promoted heaps of her songs. The episode was just a string of video clips linked together by a very weak story line. It added nothing to the plot of the series as a whole and made no use of Britney except dancing and possibly singing in her videos. The songs featured in those videos ranged from ordinary to peace poor. With the possible exception of Baby One More Time, which is a catchy pop tune.

The story line, such as it was, the Glee team wanted to do a Britney Spears song, but Mr Schuester didn’t. His girlfreind had now taken up with a dentist, John Stamos, who wanted to teach the kids about dental hygiene, so he examined each of the Gleesters and put them under general anaesthetic. Each time he did they had a dream about performing a Britney song. Brittany, the cheerleader, did not want to do a Britney song as she had been plagued by her all of her life, as her name is Brittany S Pierce (Britney Spears geddit?) She changed her mind once she had had her fantasy sequence and wanted to sing lead on all of the Glee clubs songs in the future.

Incidentally I struggled to tell who was who in the Brittany dream sequence. I know they were supposed to look alike, well it certainly worked, if confusion was what they were aiming for.

That was about it I’m afraid. I expect an avalanche of people to disagree with me, especially Britney fans. But when a show completely sells out and becomes a promotion vehicle for something else, I think it loses any integrity it has. I hope that Glee can recover from this shark jumping.
