The first of RocKwiz’s Australian tour shows went to air this week. I was really happy to see the show was extended to one hour, but I must admit a little disappointed with the show it’s self. The featured artists were mostly good, but the songs in my opinion came up a little short. We started off with Clare Bowditch, who has a great voice, but the song was for me easily forgettable. I also think she is a stunning looking girl, but the hair and make up here let her down a bit. Clare’s opponent was John Paul Young, who of course performed Love Is In The Air. He’s been trotting this out for half a century, it seems and it is always a crowd pleaser with the arm waving crowd, so who am I to put it down.
Now I’m guessing John Paul Young has made a few quid over the years, what with the success of Love is in The Air and all the TV work he gets. I wonder why he has never had his teeth fixed. They look awful. The Americans always send up the British for having bad teeth, but JP’s are as bad as any British celeb I have seen. Maybe yellow is his favourite colour.
Due to the extended nature of the show, I guess, the celebrity panellists were changed halfway through. Kevin Borich played some nice guitar, but Adalita from Magic Dirt sang awfully flat, both in her solo and the group numbers.
The group songs had a weird visual experience too, with John Paul Young between Clare Bowditch and Adalita. He looked about a foot shorter than both of them. Once again I was not that impressed with the songs, until they performed an old favourite of mine Cum on Feel the Noize by Slade, who incidentally were the first live band I ever saw, to answer one of RocKwiz’s regular questions. But they did annoy me changing the chorus line “Girls grab the boys” to “Girls rock the boys”. Just a small thing, but important when you are a purist.
I am still looking forward to more of the road shows and seeing some of the artists we saw on the sample show the week before.
