Hole, Ian Hunter, Ozzie, Iggy…

Another review of my favorite show, but not one of my favorite episodes. Hole started the show with the sweetly titled Skinny Little Bitch, a driving rock song. Courtney Love looked healthy. Hole‘s next song was called For Once in Your Life, a slower tune, but her voice sounded worse. I thought it was uneven and pretty bad. Jools interviewed Courtney Love, she said this was her first album in 12 years, then she just rambled. Hole finished the show with a song called Samantha, another hard rocker featuring more tuneless shouting. Courtney looks like she’s had some work done

Courtney Love a little work done but not on her voice

Mumford and Sons played three songs The Cave, a folky rock song, with a bit of olde english thrown in. Their second song was called Roll Away Your Stone, which was pretty funny, as Ian Hunter was also on this show and he wrote a big hit in the 70′s called Roll Away The Stone, this was not the same song. Mumford and Sons song alternated between slow and fast bits, with a sort of country reel. But I don’t like their vocals and find their lyrics pretentious. I preferred their last song Little Lion Man. One of their guitarists played a strange electric Banjo, that looked like a Guitar with a Banjo in the middle.

Angelique Kidjo an African singer from Benin started with a version of James Brown‘s Cold Sweat. It was not a great version. Her second song was more what you would expect from an African artist and I enjoyed it more.

Jools Holland interviewed Ozzie Osborne and Iggy Pop

Jools interviewed Ozzie Osborne and Iggy Pop. Neither of them had much to say, but he extracted a quote from each of them when he asked what advice they would give to anyone new coming into the business.  Ozzie said “Take all the drugs and drink all the booze you can, coz I can’t anymore”. Iggy said “Don’t listen to anyone if they’re telling you what to do”.

Ian Hunter appeared with his Rant Band. They played a song called Flowers, first. Hunter did his best Bob Dylan phrasing. It was a good rocking song. He also played one of his best known and most often covered songs, Once Bitten Twice Shy. It started off more country honk than rocky. Ian‘s voice was a bit weak. It got rockier as it went on and by the time the old Mick Ronson solo came in I was enjoying it.

Johanna Newsom sang a song called Jackrabbits while she played played the Harp. This was more folky sounds, with a southern accent darlin’

Lissie sang Oh Mississippi, a southern gospel type song. She had the best voice on the show. Jools accompanied her on piano. She threw her whole body into it and twisted kinda like Joe Cocker in his prime.
