Modern Family is currently Channel 10‘s flagship sitcom, although from the promotion it could face some stiff competition from Raising Hope. But I think that Modern Family has been chosen by the public as a favourite, without the saturation promotion. There’s good reason for that, it’s funny! It has a very good cast and good scripts.
It is a genuine ensemble piece and all of the cast get their spell in the spotlight. The show features two of the most attractive women on TV in Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen, an American sitcom legend, Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy) and potentially the biggest gay icon in sitcoms since Mr Humphries (John Inman) in Are You Being Served? Cameron Tucker who plays Eric Stonestreet was in Australia recently and appeared on Good News Week, as himself and I was surprised to learn that he is not gay, as he plays the role so well. All of the kids in the show are very good too.

Sofia Vergara, who plays Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, was a Columbian super model and unlike many models who turn to acting, she is very good. OK it’s not a real stretch for her playing a Columbian glamour girl, but she has a genuine talent for comedy. And with her great looks and sexy accent, she’s very easy to watch.
Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy) has been a regular in successful US TV shows Ed and Boston Legal, as well as guest spots in ER, Lost and Weeds. She plays the role of the put upon mother, who is slightly jealous of her fathers wife, very well. She is also very easy on the eyes and I will watch anything that she is in.
Ed O’Neill plays Jay Pritchett the head of the family. Ed of course became famous, or infamous as the loser Dad in Married with Children. But Jay is a different character, he’s rich succesful and has a stunning, much younger wife, although he still gets nagged a fair bit. Ed plays the role mostly deadpan and always dead on. I was interested to read he was almost cast as Sam Malone in Cheers, the role that Ted Danson made famous. I was quite surpirsed at that, until I read Ed O’Neill was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a Linebacker in 1969, but dropped before the season started. Sam Malone was of course an ex Baseball pitcher, but he could easily have been an ex Footballer.
Cameron Tucker plays Eric Stonestreet, Jay‘s gay son’s partner and as Jay is homophobic the interaction between them is very good. Tucker plays the role as camp as a row of tents. Eric is a frustrated performer and loves to wear outrageous outfits.
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) the gay son and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) Claire‘s geeky husband, are kind of the straight men in the show, although they do have some funny lines of their own. Mitchell is often put out by Eric‘s outrageousness, or should that be fabulousness and his Father’s homophobia. Whereas Phil is a geek who trys way too hard to be cool and it’s his wife that has to tolerate him.
As I said, the kids are all great too. Claire and Phil have two teenage daughters, Hayley (Sarah Hyland) the bimbo and Alex (Ariel Winter) the “smart one”. The girls often clash for some great comic moments and also torment their dumb younger brother Luke (Nolan Gould). But the pick of them is probably Manny (Rico Rodriguez) Gloria‘s son from her first marriage. He’s a kind of fish out of water kid, with an eye for the ladies.
There are plenty of opportunities to catch Modern Family, Channel 10 are currently showing it on Wednesday and Sunday, catch them if you can I will.
