$#*! My Dad Says

William Shatner’s new series $#*! My Dad Says (let’s face it, Shit my Dad Says) aired on Channel 9 on Monday night. Obviously the non-ratings period is over, with new series of Bones, Glee and Two and a Half Men also broadcast on the same night. More about those shows later. I’m a big fan of William Shatner, he was great in Boston Legal and is excellent at sending himself up. But there were a few moments in this that gave me the feeling it may not be a ratings killer. Shatner himself was good, playing a very similar character to Denny Crane from Boston Legal, hard nosed, no-nonsense, eccentric, opinionated and gun mad. But some of the writing and acting from the supporting cast left something to be desired.

Will Sasso, William Shatner, Nicole Sullivan and Jonathan Sadowski

This being the first episode of the show, the situation for this sit-com was set up. Dr. Edison Milford Goodson III (William Shatner) a grumpy, divorced old man is visited by his son Henry (Jonathan Sadowski) who is out of work and wants to borrow money. But once in front of his Dad he is afraid to ask, because he always seems to be disappointed in him. There’s an older brother Vince, played by Will Sasso, who was a regular in Less than Perfect and MADtv. He has a wife Bonnie, played by Nicole Sullivan who was Carrie and Doug’s Dog/Father walker in the King of Queens. She also appeared regularly on Australian TV in Scrubs, until her character committed suicide.

It was those two that appeared in one of the worst scenes. Henry had told his father that they would be speechless if he took them up on their offer of moving in with them. The scene where he tested the theory had some really bad acting and a totally unbelievable situation with the son and daughter in law talking gibberish in response. Another weak scene followed with Shatner and Henry doing one word answers to each others questions, that also felt very contrived.

I’ll give the show a few more chances, as it had some good moments and Bill Shatner may make it worth watching.

Well I gave it a few more tries and it never improved in fact I began to think it should be called “$#*!some writers wrote”.

But I was not alone, Channel 9 never gave it much of a chance, moving it around, showing it then not showing it, now I hear it has been droppeed from schedules in the U.S.

William Shatner could not carry it alone, poor scripts and weak storylines were too much for anyone. So bye bye $#*! My Dad Says

I was not sorry to see the show got canned, but as you may know the show was based on the Tweets of Justin Halpern about things his father had said.

I stumbled across Halpern’s Tumblr site today and that was pretty funny, so if anyone is interested the link to it is http://justinhalpern.tumblr.com/

His Twitter handle is @shitmydadsays and he has nearly 3 million followers, so there must be something in it.
