Channel 9‘s latest US sitcom began last week. Mike and Molly is the story of an overweight couple who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. The show apparently comes from the makers of Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory, according to the promos. After the first episode I see a lot of potential for the show.
Mike is a beat Cop, played by Billy Gardell, who has been seen in several other comedies in supporting roles. In fact he regularly played a Cop in My Name is Earl, but this is the first lead role I have seen him in. Molly is a Teacher, played by Melissa McCarthy, who was Lorelai‘s best friend and Chef in The Gilmore Girls and Christina Applegate‘s sidekick in Samantha Who? Both of them have good comic timing, so it was probably about time they got their own show. The back up cast consists of Molly‘s unlikely looking family, her Mother played by Swoosie Kurtz and her sister played by Katy Mixon. It’s a stretch to imagine that those three are related, but I don’t think that will effect anyone’s enjoyment. Mike has a beat partner, Carl, played Reno Wilson, he’s sharp and sassy, but apparently still lives with his Mother.
Both Mike and Molly had some great lines. Molly‘s response to her Mother saying she was a big boned girl, “Bones don’t jiggle, Ma” was a good one, despite being repeated incessantly in the promos. But Mike had the best of the show, with a genuine laugh out loud moment, when he described to Molly‘s class how he became a Cop because it was an honourable profession. His Father had been a Cop and went out every day to look after the people on his patch and always treated them fairly and that’s how it was everyday until the end. “Then he died?” asked one of the kids. “No” said Mike, “He fell in love with a Hooker and they moved to Boco Raton and left me and Ma, I guess I should have stopped at honourable profession.”
Keep an eye out for Mike and Molly I think it will provide some welcome laughs on Wednesday nights.
